These are the most common type of retainers we provide at Davis Orthodontics. Made from smooth, durable plastic, they’re custom-designed using 3D scans and produced in-house for speed and precision. Worn mostly at night, they’re comfortable, low-profile, and easy to maintain, making it simple to protect your smile for years to come.

Hawley retainers

Hawley retainers are the classic wire-and-acrylic retainers that many patients recognize. These retainers are durable, adjustable, and custom-molded to fit the roof of your mouth or lower arch. The metal wire holds your teeth in position while allowing for minor tweaks if needed. Hawley retainers are a reliable long-term solution and are especially popular for their adjustability and longevity.

Fixed retainers

Also known as bonded or permanent retainers, these are thin wires attached to the back of your front teeth to prevent movement. They’re a great option for patients at higher risk of relapse or for those who want to “set it and forget it.” We’ll teach you how to care for them and check their condition at your regular visits.

Replacement retainers

Lost your retainer? No problem. Because we store your digital scan, we can quickly print a replacement without requiring a new impression. Whether it’s been a few weeks or a few years, we’ll make sure your smile stays on track.

Digital scan and design

Once your orthodontic treatment is complete, we take a final digital scan of your smile and design your retainer based on that model.

Custom fabrication

Using our in-house 3D printer, we create your clear aligner-style retainer quickly and with precise accuracy—often without needing to send anything to an outside lab.

Long-term care and support

We’ll walk you through how to wear and care for your retainer. If you ever lose or break it, we can make a new one fast, just bring in your original 3D-printed model. If you don't have access to the original, we can take a new scan quickly, so you can get back to wearing your retainer right away.

How long do I have to wear my retainer?

To maintain your new smile, we recommend wearing your retainer at night indefinitely. This helps ensure your results last a lifetime.

What happens if I lose my retainer?

Contact us right away. If you bring in your original 3D-printed models, we can often 3D print a replacement without needing a new impression. If you don't have the models available, we'll simply take a new scan to create your replacement. The sooner we replace it, the less chance your teeth have to shift.

Are clear retainers as effective as wire retainers?

Yes! When worn as directed, clear retainers are just as effective at holding your teeth in place as traditional options. They’re also more discreet and comfortable for most patients.
