Dentofacial Orthopedics

Children are usually the best candidates for dentofacial orthopedics because their jaws are still growing and we can influence the shape and size of the bones to correct any imbalances. The treatment typically involves two phases. In phase one, we address facial growth and regulate the width of the upper and lower arch to make sure the permanent teeth have enough space to erupt properly. Then, in phase two, we straighten the teeth with braces or Invisalign Teen. Since adults’ bones have hardened, it’s not as easy to stimulate bone growth. However, in some cases, we can perform surgery to bring the jaw into alignment prior to starting orthodontic treatment.
